[Johor Bahru] Imagine stepping into an oriental teahouse café, yet you know you are in Johor Bahru.

This time I decided to visit a new café in JB with a difference, as not many offer such ancient China “gu feng” vibes. (Cues music: Jay Chou’s 青花瓷 Qing Hua Ci)

Xuan Cafe 轩•女皇烘焙 is located in Taman Sentosa, quite close to the city centre.

As soon as you step inside, you notice the picturesque setting that resembles a classical Chinese courtyard.

The décor is considered well-designed, making every corner a possible spot for photo-taking.

There is a tree with hanging hand fans (“gongshan”) and props such as Chinese umbrellas around. Some customers even came dressed the part.

The café’s attention to detail extends to the food and tableware.

The menu combines Western and Chinese elements. For brunch, there are Kou Shui Ji Eggs Benedict (RM26), Smoked Duck Broccoli (RM24), and Pineapple Avo Salmon (RM24).

If you need something more filling, there are Shrimp Lao Gan Ma Spaghetti (RM18), Four Spoon Mentaiko Shrimp Spaghetti (RM28.90), Crab Roe Over Rice (RM32.90), and Sichuan Style Fish Ochazuke (RM25).

I decided to try their Kou Shui Ji Sandwich (RM19.90). Kou Shui Ji, also known as “Mouthwatering Chicken,” is a popular Sichuan dish featuring poached chicken served cold.

The sandwich features tender chicken with a flavourful sauce, nestled between soft white bread.

Fresh vegetables like cucumber and tomato add a refreshing crunch, while the egg and mayonnaise provide a richness that ties the ingredients together.

It wasn’t as spicy as I imagined, but the half-oozy egg made it more appealing.

Each bite is a delightful mix of textures and tastes, with the spice of the chicken complementing the smoothness of the mayonnaise.

It seems like the Tiramisu (RM20.90) is a must-have here, served in a charming Chinese tea cup. This presentation adds an extra layer of elegance and whimsy to the experience.

The Tiramisu itself was light and airy, with layers of rich mascarpone cheese and coffee-soaked ladyfingers. I noted that the alcohol level was rather strong – I think that’s why some customers liked it.

To accompany my meal, I chose the Iced Oolong Milk Tea (RM13).

Like Bubble Tea without the pearls, the tea has a nice roasted flavour, beautifully balanced with creamy milk, and pleasantly sweet.

The fusion of traditional oriental and modern elements creates a serene atmosphere.

Whether you are looking to enjoy a quiet meal or take photographs, Xuan Cafe is somewhere you can look out for.
