[Kuala Lumpur] If you are looking for elevated Western breakfast fare with high-quality coffee in Kuala Lumpur, VCR is one of the best cafes out there.

That is according to online reviews and recommendations.

Located on Jalan Galloway at Bukit Bintang, it is a popular hangout for brunch and coffee aficionados in Kuala Lumpur.

The building itself, built in 1927 near the old Pudu Jail, is quite dated. This piece of history is giving the café a charm of its own.

Did you know the café was named after the street, Jalan Galloway, where many wardens used to reside?

Ambiance is super important for a café, and VCR’s ambiance is spot on. The lighting, ventilation, and furnishing contribute to the vibrant, dynamic atmosphere.

Here you will find a mingling of locals, tourists, digital nomads, and everyone in between.

Some like to chill at the cosy, dimly lit seating area on the ground floor.

I preferred the airy, breezy first floor decked with rattan chairs for a relaxing meal.

VCR’s food menu is a collection of globally inspired brunch dishes that still maintain that local touch.

Breakfast items are served from 8:30am to 3:30pm, so you have a good leeway.

Choices include VCR Big Breakfast (RM 40), Eggs Royale (RM 35), Truffle Scramble Gravlax (RM 35), VCR Brekkie (RM 32), Avocado Toast (RM 28), Turkish Style Eggs (RM 28), Three Cheese Toastie (RM 28), VCR English Muffin (RM 28), and Granola (RM 25).

For the brunch items, I went West Asian and tried their Turkish-style eggs (RM 28) served atop chickpeas and chipolata sausage in a rich Pomodoro sauce.

There was tangy element to this soft-boiled egg dish due to the added Greek yogurt (less sweet than regular yogurt).

Crunchy pistachios also top this dish, with a side of two slices of crisp seeded (flaxseed) sourdough toast.

If pressed for time, their All-Day Menu will save the day, available till 7:30pm.

There is their signature Soft-Shell Crab Burger (RM 30), Pennsylvania’s Soul (RM 30), French Toast (RM 25), VCR House Salad (RM 22), and Sourdough Waffle and Jam (RM 19).

The Soft Shell Crab Burger (RM 30) comes with whole crab – body, legs, and all – deep-fried and sandwiched between sesame-seeded buns.

You can easily bite into the soft shell to taste the delicately sweet and buttery crab meat.

I recommend their version of French Toast (RM 25) to those fond of coffee and cocoa flavours.

What they did was top the warm, fluffy brioche with a scoop of espresso no-churn ice cream, and accompany it with mocha sauce and cocoa crumbles.

You can appreciate the dollop of raspberry compote serving as a mini break from all the chocolatey-ness.

Overall, their menu has enough variety. If you have a particular dietary preference, like gluten-free, vegetarian, or vegan, you’ll find menu options that would work.

Among the fanbase of VCR offerings are the coffee enthusiasts.

They are particularly fond of the Flat White, citing its perfect bitterness and creamy foam. Some say it is Australian-approved, as Aussies take their Flat Whites seriously.

VCR’s food offerings have earned mixed reviews, but I noticed they swing more to the positive.

Some did experience long wait times for their orders. The place often fills up quickly, so this long wait time is a deal breaker, especially during peak periods.

Whatever the reason you’re here, when it comes to brunch and coffee in KL, VCR is one of the top recommended choices.
