[Ipoh] Head to Ipoh, and you must try “Tauge Ayam” or “Nga Choi Kai” which translates to “Bean Sprout Chicken”.

Lou Wong Bean Sprout Chicken, or Restoran Tauge Ayam Lou Wong 老黄芽菜鸡沙河粉, is one of the most well-known eateries in town serving this dish.

An institution since 1957, the eatery is touristy (but also one to tick off your Ipoh food bucket list).

Its location in the heart of Ipoh makes it convenient to visit, as the area transforms at night into a lively, open-air dining experience.

The night market, Gerbang Malam, is right next door.

The food here is simple yet iconic.

Chicken options include a single portion (RM13.00), for two people (RM24.00), half a chicken (RM38.00), and a whole chicken for larger groups (RM76.00).

The poached chicken, served in a light soy sauce, was flavourful, though I expected it to be more succulent and tender.

Read some online reviews, and opinions are divided on whether it lives up to its reputation.

Some diners may find the chicken not as tender as expected, while others appreciate its lean texture.

The rice that accompanies the dish is fragrant and moist, though the hor fun was smooth but ordinary in comparison to other top Ipoh shops.

So, order the rice here.

The true star to me is the bean sprouts.

These bean sprouts are served in portions for different group sizes, starting from a single portion (RM4.00) up to a large portion for seven or more people (RM18.00).

Locally grown to benefit from Ipoh’s mineral-rich mountain water, these sprouts are large, crunchy, and slightly sweet with a touch of pepperiness.

Even those who are not fans of bean sprouts may find themselves pleasantly surprised by their freshness. Be sure to order at least one plate.

Other side items include fish or meatballs with soup, available in various portion sizes such as 5 pieces (RM7.50) and 10 pieces (RM15.00).

I had a mixed bowl, and I preferred the fish balls for their bouncy texture and light taste. The beef balls were a little too dense.

Lou Wong also offers special side dishes like Chicken Feet (RM10.00 for a small portion), Abalone Mushroom (RM12.00), and Tau Fu (RM10.00).

In terms of service, it is efficient but unremarkable. The staff work quickly to serve the large crowds, but don’t expect much beyond the basics.

While Lou Wong remains a must-visit for first-timers in Ipoh, especially for tourists, some locals prefer neighbouring eateries with similar menus.

Despite mixed reviews, Lou Wong continues to be a cornerstone of Ipoh’s food scene, thanks in part to its long history and central location.
